NCLC 102
GLOBAL NETWORKS AND COMMUNICATION
The course overview and goals for NCLC 102 is:
This fall’s NCLC 102 will prepare students for participation in a global society by investigating globalization through the lens of food and sovereignty. We will consider such critical topics as cultural identity, (neo)colonialism, imperialism, hegemony, and the global system of production, distribution, and consumption.
What I really loved about this class was how they used the concept of food as the main lens for exploring our global networks and communications theme.
The main project that we had in this class was our Food Book assignment. Out of all the Food Book assignments, the one I enjoyed the most was Food Book 2.
What I really liked about this assignment was that I had to look up a lot of information about the consumption, distribution and production of wheat. At first, I dreaded having to look up all that information but after looking at some articles and websites, I found that the information I found was really intriguing.
- The US, China, and India are the three countries that produce the most wheat
- Wheat is the most grown crop around the world
- Wheat had a close connection with the Green Revolution, in that because of all the pesticides that were used in countries, like India, it has deteriorated the soil and has made it more difficult to stop the use of pesticides.
It was just fascinating how looking up one topic could lead to so many different topics that you wouldn’t think was related to the first.
It truly showed the concept of global networks, and is why the use of food as a lens for this class was amazing!
